Fitness Secrets Revealed #1 – Big Box Gyms VS. Training Facilities
[ Fitness Secrets Revealed ]
Big Box Gyms VS. Training Facilities
The fitness industry has changed more in the last 10 years than in the 60 years prior. Before the training-centric gyms (Boot Camp Style), all that existed were big box (Commercial Gyms) gyms like LA Fitness, Planet and Retro Fitness. Now each week new training facilities and Cross Fit boxes are popping up on every corner.
Low Cost Low Value
Big box gyms are trying to adapt by offering new fitness classes to their members, charging an additional rate, but in turn delivering far inferior results. Do their efforts to adapt stand a fighting chance against the new training gyms?
I think not, and here is my argument! You must be able to keep your promises! People are paying you to help them succeed. People fail in gyms because they are guessing most of the time. New training facilities are being opened across the country by ex-collegiate and pro athletes. The real secret is training like an athlete.
You want to have a sick body and move well. We want to have more energy and confidence. That’s why we join gyms. Feel free to disagree, but over the past 5 years I have trained over 2,000 people and the majority of the people had one thing in common: They want to feel better.
Big box gyms fail miserably at getting their members results. I am sure there are tons of people working out at commercial gyms that are in great shape, but what you don’t see are the members sitting at home, still pay each month.
Look some people aren’t ready to succeed yet. They need to fail a few more times before really wanting to succeed. Training gyms are designed for people who are serious and committed to success. Why else would you pay more for a membership?
You want value, not something somebody put together on the lunch break of their other side job. Training gyms usually have a staff made up of real fitness professionals with a 4 year degree, multiple certifications and often travel to attend events and network with other fitness professionals. You want to train with the best. Someone who has invested far more than a weekend course.
Commercial Gym Business Design Vs. Small Group Personal/Large Group Training
Box gyms are not built to get results. They are built to get members. I recently read that a planet fitness that had over 6,000 members and only had enough space to hold a max capacity of about 350 at one time. This means that a lot of people are not showing up. If they are not training consistently they are not seeing any results.

No results equals no value. You may only pay 10 bucks a month, but like they say “You get what you pay for”. You get to rent their treadmills and machines and then stop coming once you hit a plateau. Then they have more space to bring in more people who will soon follow your lead.
Training gyms are more focused on the member’s success. Instead of shooting for 6,000 members, training gyms usually do very well at 250 to 350 members. Same revenue as the big box gym with a fraction of the members. This usually means they are relying on delivering quality to just a small number of people. It really is impossible to make a customer any more than just a number with this system. There are too many members in a box gym to deliver great service to them, unless they pay for personal training. In Thomas Plummer’s book “How to Make More Money in the Fitness Industry,” only 3-6% of box gym members actually buy personal training.

The percentage is so low because the price is so high. The average box gym charges $100 for a 1 hour training session. Typically it takes my members training 2-3 days a week to transform their body in 8-12 weeks. Let’s do the math. In order to get results with a trainer in a box gym you will pay $800 to $1,200 per month for your new sexy body! That is a pretty steep price to pay to be healthy.
The worst part is that your trainer is usually under qualified and under paid. Most will make $12 per hour while the gym cashes in on the other $88. Just think how excited that trainer is to get you your new abs.
They sucker you in on their low membership price, count on you failing and either paying for an expensive trainer or just quitting all together. When was the last time you heard someone say they had fun at the gym working out alone?
At training gyms you don’t have to suffer through workouts to be successful. Group personal training is fun, exciting and keeps you engaged. When you fall off the wagon a good gym will reach out to their members to get them back on track.
Training facilities usually charge a fraction of the price and get double if not triple the results. The secret is community and accountability. You have more contact with coaches and a group of people just like you helping push you to your goals. This works better because we often connect more to our peers and people feel like they let their friends down if they fail.

Pricing for a training facility can cost you anywhere from $150 for large group training to $500 for more high end semi-private training. Most people pay around $250 a month and actually get the results they paid for.
I may sound biased because I own a training facility, but I have been a part of all types of gyms. I was a member at LA Fitness growing up and went frequently to lift, play basketball and swim. Basically I was renting equipment. I often got amazing results! Most people are not me though. Most people don’t know how to do exercise properly without hurting themselves in the process. They often watch others and then do what they are doing or look at the pictures on the machine with their favorite body part to train.
On the other hand, training facilities use a program of some sort. Whether it be a workout of the day or a customized training program, every rep and set is already programmed and the workouts usually cover the essential movement patterns needed to get results.
We need to realize that training is a science. Most of us are not science nerds like me and my peers, so it is easier to let a pro do what they do! The personal trainer at the box gym usually does not have the credentials to be considered an expert. Matter of fact, I knew a lot of trainers who simply gave their clients the same workouts they did. So if you are a soccer mom, you are going to love your “meathead” personal trainer’s new chest routine! You are going to get a serious pump your next trip to the gym!
Don’t completely give up on trainers at the box gyms. Some are just building their career and might actually be more passionate about training then most training gym owners. Sometimes they are just a couple years out from being a major player in their respected expertise.
Now I am not saying every training gym is a good one. Definitely not going to say they all have good programs. That is up to you to do the research. Be careful of gimmicks and the high pressure sales tactics.

Make sure you like the people you are about to do business with. Your health is serious and training can be dangerous, so avoid being coached by amateurs. Most training gyms offer a trial program & if they are any good they will have a money back guarantee. If your gym is willing to give you $50-$300 back if you fail, they are confident you are going to succeed.
In our gym people can do intro programs like 21 day jump start, 30 day trial and 6-12 week transformations. This allows you to see results or what I like to call value. You shouldn’t be forced to sign up for a year or more until you have seen what the program is all about.
Big box gyms give you 1 or 2 free sessions where their trainer beats you up to show you that you need them. This sales tactic doesn’t fly in my book and I feel a person just starting up should actually move a lot slower and do much more basic exercises in the beginning to decrease the risk of injury.
Most deconditioned people entering the gym feel they must go 100 miles per hour in order to get great results. Just simply moving more and eating better is enough to kick start the process.
To sum it all up, don’t get distracted. Your fitness class may be fun and interesting, but group fitness classes at box gyms do not get real long term results because they are not designed to. Getting results requires a detailed plan of progressive training. As the body adapts, the program increases in difficulty so that you never hit a plateau. Training gyms usually coach nutrition and give support outside of the gym, which is where most people tend to self-destruct. It is easy to fall of the wagon in the 164 hours that you do not see your coach or trainer.

Avoid failing. Success is simple, you just need a plan. You will have to work, and it will be difficult, but the process really is simple. Change your mindset and start being more positive even when you don’t see results yet. Continue to improve your nutrition and push yourself a little more each week than the week before.
