Personal mastery is the discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively. — Peter Senge, The Fifth Discipline
What motivates you to become the best you? Discover the 3 secrets I used to launch my fitness career.
Living a healthy lifestyle is not always easy. In my industry you are constantly under stress both physical and emotional each day. Waking up extremely early and going to bed late is the easiest way to experience fitness burn out. Somehow something keeps me going and it is something we all have. Our “Why.”
When a person walks into a gym looking to completely transform their life, it can scare the hell out of them. In fact the words change scare the hell out of most people. If you have a strong enough why than it will always be easy to make the necessary changes in your behavior to become the best you.
Nobody is here to tell you it will be easy. You know, like the old saying it will be worth it in the end! Reality is, that’s exactly what makes the success taste so damn sweet. We all have the ability to change and start living the life we dream, but we are all often caught up in the negative world around us. Hint that’s the second secret. Since the cat is out the bag let’s just release the last secret now also. Secret three and the most important is to commit.
Secret #1: Connect With Your Why
You have to look deep down inside and find the pain or fear that is causing you to want to change. You see yourself in a picture and you are embarrassed at what you see. Your doctor told you that if you don’t change you might now see the next 20 years or you want to get in shape so that you can finally have confidence.
Having a strong why will allow you to dig for that pain and fear and then attack your goals with such ferocity that you inspire everyone around you to change as well. Your why will help motivate you when your sore from your last workout or you want to eat terrible food with your friends. Your why keeps you in the gym and it keeps you moving forward.
Secret #2: Eliminate All Negativity
Let’s face it, the world is not all peaches and rainbows. The fitness industry may be one of the hardest fields when it comes to negativity. So many people are unhappy that they treat others terrible just to make themselves feel better. If you want to have a happy and stress free life eliminate negative people from your life.
Negative people will only bring down the positive if you allow it. My secret is to immediately take myself out of these situations. Don’t allow unhappy people to take you down as well. Your success is depending on you being able to push through all obstacles.
Surround yourself with like-minded people who bring out the best in you. Don’t worry, those miserable people will either get with the program or see themselves being excluded out of your life. You have people depending on you. Your family, friends, kids or a spouse. We have a responsibility to help those around us and we can’t do that if we are neglecting ourselves.
Secret #3: Decide & Take Action
The most liberating thing you can do is decide you are going to do something and actually doing it. I decided a while back that I wanted to be the best gym around. I knew nothing about running a fitness business. I knew I just wanted to help people achieve happiness and success. This was a passion that most people could relate to in the industry. I knew if I wanted to be the best I needed to become a business owner and not a trainer.
Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love training and inspiring others to do the same, but I have a responsibility to take care of my team and give them the tools to be successful in their careers also. The better our team was, the more people we could help transform their lives. After seeing what TFW was doing all over the world inspired me to decide I wanted more.
I started to bring on staff to allow me to go out and network with the top fitness professionals in the world. This decision lead me to Las Vegas. I attended the Changing the Game Fitness Business Summit. In this weekend I met the industry leading coaches and business owner who all had tons of advice to helping me achieve my goals.
I later joined the Training for Warriors network. This single decision has catapulted my career in less than 6 months. I have had the opportunity to have an article published, join a fitness mastermind and sit down with some of the best coaches in the world and learn first-hand how they were helping their communities around them through health and fitness
Bonus Secret: Don’t Look Back
Because of a simple decision, I was able to reconnect with my why in a stronger more powerful way. We can now help so many more people change their lives for the better. We have grown in so many ways and now are ready to give back to the community through our Charity Workouts for Cancer. This will also allow us to help create a program for under privilege athletes to get the training to help them earn a chance to go to college.
None of this would be possible if I allow negativity to hold me back from the bigger dream. What is your why? What is keeping you going? If you don’t have one than take some time to write it down. Set some goals you want to accomplish and start eliminating negative people out of your life. Finally make the decision to be great and don’t look back.
